When she saw it again, “it had been sliced into pieces” so that the company could turn it into a mass-produced pattern. It was a fitting introduction to the company that would leach her useful qualities and mistreat the whole person. “Strip Tees” is devourable, rendered in efficient, colorful scenes. Men Are Baring Midriffs in Crop Tops
  + stars: | 2023-07-09 | by ( Emma Grillo | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
As men have embraced shorter shorts over the past few years, some have also started to wear shorter shirts — specifically, crop tops. Though men have been known to wear stomach-baring garments when they exercise or go to the beach, lately crop tops can be seen on guys at stores and bars. Some wearers are making theirs by taking scissors to old T-shirts; others buy them off the rack, often from stores’ women’s sections. David Mendoza, 29, an operations manager in New York, owns crop tops of varying lengths. “If I’m wearing one just to go out casually, the crop top will be mid- to long length,” Mr. Mendoza said.

Fed funds futures showed expectations of a 25 basis point hike at the end of a two-day policy meeting on July 26 rose to 88.7%, according to CME Group's FedWatch Tool. The dollar index , which measures the U.S. currency against a basket of six others, including the euro and Japan's yen, rose 0.262% . The Fed will likely increase rates in July after the hawkish pause last month baring any surprises, said Jeffrey Roach, chief economist for LPL Financial. The dollar rose to around 144.48 yen, but was still below the 145 threshold that prompted intervention by Japanese authorities last autumn. The dollar-yen rate has broadly moved in sync with the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield , which rose to 3.9375% after the Fed minutes were released.

Pippa Garner’s Wild Ride
  + stars: | 2023-06-30 | by ( Evan Moffitt | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
High-heeled roller skates, a palm-frond umbrella and a shower in a can — these are just a few of Pippa Garner’s hundreds of inventions. For the past 50 years, the artist has been satirizing U.S. consumer habits with designs that are not always entirely useful. Few things have escaped her restless, imaginative tinkering, from automobiles to her own body, which she began, in her words, “gender-hacking” in the mid-1980s. That may be why the art world establishment long treated Garner, 81, as a fringe character, more madcap inventor than conceptual artist in the tradition of Marcel Duchamp or Andy Warhol. There are T-shirts printed with Garner’s sardonic proto-meme images and slogans, including one featuring the actor Gary Busey and the words “I pay my stalker a living wage” in all caps.

The first episode begins with the pop star Jocelyn, played by Lily-Rose Depp, baring her breasts during a photo shoot as a team of handlers, crew members and an ineffectual intimacy coordinator look on. There will be no flannel PJs for Joss; a pair of wake-up scenes make it clear to viewers that she sleeps in a thong. It isn’t only the show’s gratuitous nudity that harks back to Mr. Lyne and company, but the overall look and mood, which recall a louche glamour from the time of boxy Armani suits and cocaine nights. A main setting is a $70 million mansion in Bel Air that looks like something out of Mr. De Palma’s “Scarface” but is in fact Mr. Tesfaye’s real-life home. A number of young viewers have said they find sex scenes embarrassing, but Mr. Levinson, who created the HBO drama “Euphoria,” and his fellow producers have made no secret of their desire to pay homage to the heyday of Cinemax (when it had the nickname Skinemax).

Chanel’s Los Angeles cruise fashion show was full of pink and sparkles. Photo: ChanelLOS ANGELES—After Tuesday’s Chanel cruise show at Paramount Studios, Dr. Birgit Scheuer Niro bopped to the beat of a live Snoop Dogg show in a pink-tweed midriff-baring suit, her blond hair in a high ponytail. “A real, real, real Beverly Hills housewife,” she said of her look—although in reality, she is a German physician based in Paris and specializing in breast-cancer screening. “It’s a serious profession, and my hobby is fashion,” said Dr. Scheuer Niro, a Chanel client important enough to receive a coveted invitation to the fashion show. “I always enjoy when I see other clients in the same outfit,” said the doctor, of a nearby client in the same pink Chanel cruise look.
The quiet luxury trend is dominating 2023 after years of trends like "dopamine dressing." David Russell/HBOLike most other fashion trends, the move toward quiet luxury, or "stealth wealth," is part of a cycle. Liz Hafalia/The San Francisco Chronicle via Getty ImagesAt this point, quiet luxury has become so popular that even luxury brands themselves are being asked about it. She also highlighted Italian luxury house Brunello Cucinelli, French leather goods firm Hermès, and Armani, who has been doing quiet luxury for nearly two decades. If that's a bit outside your budget, there are mass-market retailers partaking in what the quiet luxury trend is promoting: durable, sustainably made clothing in timeless fabrics and silhouettes.
‘Renfield’ Review: Dracula, Worst Boss Ever
  + stars: | 2023-04-13 | by ( Manohla Dargis | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Count Dracula has been dead for so long and gone through so many iterations — exotic, satanic, romantic — that it’s almost surprising there’s any juice left in the thirsty old boy. Yet here he is again, resurrected by a glorious, vamping Nicolas Cage, swinging a cape, baring his fangs and stealing his every scene. He’s basically toast, and our guy, the Count’s unhappy servant, Renfield (a Nicholas Hoult type, relatable, smooth, good-looking) — after years of groveling and scarfing bugs — has had it. After a century of pop-culture celebrity and box-office success there’s no need: He is what he is, a vampire. He’s also, unsurprisingly given the job’s grisly requirements, a terrible boss, which the movie uses to economically establish how the long-suffering Renfield joins the support group.
Vintage Red-Carpet Looks Are Having a Moment

With awards season in full swing comes the red-carpet photo dump of picture-perfect celebrities: Hours have been spent on hair and makeup; limbs are dripping in six-figure jewels; and couture finery abounds. But on Instagram, a different, less fussy era of red-carpet dressing has begun to hold sway via accounts that serve as scrapbooks of what celebrities once wore. The 2002 MTV Video Music Awards as a new fashion touchstone, for example? A post last year on New York stylist and vintage fashion archivist Gabriel Held’s Instagram feed suggested as much, with a carousel of images featuring the likes of Molly Sims and Ashanti in various hip bone–baring, low-slung styles emblematic of the early aughts. “I feel like the Gen Z kids are at a point now where they’re kind of referencing the era that they were born in,” says Held.
LONDON, March 6 (Reuters) - From classic tuxedos to shiny jumpsuits, menswear has dazzled on the red carpets this awards season, sometimes even attracting the most attention with eye-catching looks. Singer Harry Styles arrived at the Grammy Awards in a chest-baring sparkling harlequin jumpsuit, while Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan has chosen ensembles in pale blue and red as his style choices for the Golden Globes and British Academy of Film (BAFTA) Awards. While classic suits and tuxedos are still a red carpet staple, menswear now features plenty of variety and bolder choices - vibrant colours, sparkling embroidery or detailing, as fashion favourite, actor Timothee Chalamet has often demonstrated with his non-traditional outfits. Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne has won style accolades for his red carpet choices this awards season, which culminates with Sunday's Oscars. Asked what she thought of men's fashion this award season, Oscar nominee Michelle Yeoh told Reuters last month: "I love it."

What protests in China may mean for the economy
  + stars: | 2022-11-29 | by ( Nicole Goodkind | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
New York CNN Business —Protests against China’s prolonged and restrictive Covid regulations spread across the country over the weekend. Oil plunged and hit 2022 lows on Monday, while shares of companies that rely on China for production felt the heat. Oil prices dropped sharply, with investors concerned that surging Covid cases and protests in China may sap demand from one of the world’s largest oil consumers. They don’t want to end their covid policy but they also want to ensure that the political unrest doesn’t grow. This week is chock full of important economic data releases, many of which will help guide the Fed’s next interest rate hike decision in December.
Nancy Pelosi announced Thursday that she'd be stepping down from her position as House Speaker. Pelosi donned a golden accessory on the lapel of her blazer. She wore the same dress to both of Former President Donald Trump's impeachments, baring her golden brooch in 2019 and ditching it in 2021, Insider previously reported. The golden accessory, according to The Post in 2019, boasts an eagle sitting atop a globe and a shaft comprised of 13 rods that symbolize the original 13 colonies.

In fact, of the four guards convicted of sexually assaulting children at Ware, Mr. Peace would be the only one imprisoned.
